Measurements are in " mm ". Sizes were determined by custom made shoes prior to 1840. First shoes available on "shelves" was that year.

Would you believe the Pilgrims, after bringing shoemakers on the second voyage, measured shoe sizes in..in...in....you ready?

Barley corns.
Igneous idea, since they rejected metrics in England.

The foot is measured from heel to toe. My foot is 8 1/2 inches so my shoe size is 8 1/2. Width is also measured but I'm not sure of the precise calculations for that. All I know is that I can't usually find decent shoes to fit me in my area. They're all too skinny.

Actually it's easy. Every US men shoe size is about 1/3 of an inch, with:

size 11 mens: your foot is 11 inches long
size 10 mens: your foot is 10.5 inches long
size 12 mens: your foot is 11.3 inches long

So from size 11 mens, subtract 1/3 of an inch and you go down one full size. Increase 1/3 of an inch and you go up one full size, etc.

Every US women shoe size is about 1/3 of an inch, with:

size 9 1/2 womens : your foot is 10 inches long
size 8 1/2 womens: your foot is 9.6 inches long
size 7 1/2 womens: your foot is 9.3 inches long
size 6 1/2 womens: your foot is 9 inches long
size 11 1/2 womens: 10.6 inch long foot

So from size 9 1/2 womens, subtract 1/3 of an inch and you go down one full size. Increase 1/3 of an inch and you go up one full size, etc.

In a shoe shop the heel to toe distance is measured and it is then converted in to shoe size.

The gents and ladies have differernt sizes conversion ; so also the children.
