Lower your voice to just above a whisper or to a normal tone. It takes concentration and focus to hear someone speak that way.

Remove the anger from your voice and control your temper.

Don't speak in accusatory tone.

Smile. They are only testing you & trying to grow up.

Good luck.
I found that it was almost effective if I did this:
I asked the kids to do the dishes, He said "sure". He didn't do the dishes. I went out for ice cream and didn't get any for him. He said "that's lame and you never do anything for me". I said "I'm waiting for you to do the dishes". He got a clue by the third or forth trip for ice cream. You just have to be prepared to be told all about how mean you are. Teens are like 2 year olds with money and car keys. The discipline is not unlike the way you would teach a 2 year old.You have to find a way to make being an adult with manners look like something they want to do. The same way you make going to the potty and being a "big boy" look appealing to a toddler. And just keep telling yourself that no one is a teen ager forever. They grow up and turn into people sooner or later.
peace.

ps. Aredhel has the right idea!

It's tough to remove priviledges from anyone but that is probably the best way to get what you want. Make the deal,"If you don't do the chores required you don't get for example the car keys." Priviledges are rewards not expectations. Rewards are given when something is done & done well. Parenting IS the hardest job of all because in order to teach responsibility you must teach the hard lessons as well. Limitations of patience can & will be reached by a boss when the employee fails repeatedly. Oh boy & girl - God Bless & Good Luck!

Considering how teenagers are today, I'd recommend liberal usage of a baseball bat. :)

Take away their stuff. Confine them to a room with nothing but books. No games no phone no tv. After a while of going stir crazy, they'll start to get the idea that maybe they should listen for a change.

If that doesn't work, THEN use the bat.

I think a good way to get them to listen and obey is to embaress them, pick them up from school with a towel wrapped around your head, windows open and some corny music really loud, or stand outside in front of the school and as they walk out run to them and scream how much you missed them, you could also pick them up at their class room and say you have to take them home early because he's got hemoroids and you need to ge them treated.

Embaressing them will make them respect you because you're getting them where it hurts, socially! It's worth a shot. Good luck, my kid is only 7 right now and I am not looking forward to the teen years, especially knowing what I did in those days....

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN to them.
And really SHOW them things. What you DO, is what they LEARN.
Don't be afraid of telling them also your own "teenager" experience... your mistakes... what you've learned.

Make them feel comfortable to TELL YOU EVERYTHING...
even if sometimes you don't approve...
tell them "I don't like this idea... but... you're responsible... right? So you'll take the consequences for that..."
It's very important that they tell you things... 'cause they're gonna do that anyway without telling it to you....

so... Love them...

good luck!

RESPECT! Treat them like adults. They are almost there and the need to understand that they have responsibilities.

You just have to let them know that you mean business. You don't have to yell but you have got to be firm or else they will walk all over you.

Stay calm and give them clear choices. let them know what the consequences will be for their desicions and then FOLLOW through. you will never get anywhere if you are not persistant.
