Any one who says they would welcome the travellers have obviously never had them living close to them. Not many people would be happy with them moving in because unfortunately they have a reputation of being rough and messy i.e. leaving a mess on the ground when they leave for the neighbourhood to clean up. My mam is involved in creating camps for them to live in but most neighbourhoods vote against them being created and therefore they set up in places that are inappropriate or even dangerous i.e. beside major roads. I personally would not like them to set up outside my house, for one thing it would be very cramped! However saying that I do feel that society is very unfair to them and I guess I'm just adding to that inequality they face every day.

Travellers are recognised as an ethnic/cultural group here in Ireland, so the anti-racist question is relevant here. There's a family just round the corner from me. They run a business offering horse-carriage rides to tourists so there's always horse-shite on the street... But they are nice and friendly and actually, the streets in north Dublin are so dirty that a dose of manure can only make them cleaner!

A real gypsie would be welcome next to me cause there are nice people who live in a well mannered and enviromental friendly way(they have done for hundreds of years).
To many people confuse Gypsies with travellers who on the other hand i would not welcome for they create mess, have no respect for the land around them and are notorous for stealing.
Not all but they generally come with problems,Every one deserves a chance and i would welcome any one until they upset the balance of what was!(in a bad way).
Traditional gypsies have hard lives now because of travellers living in the same circumstances but not in the same methods!

It depends. Some groups of travellers are extremely respectful of the surrounding area and deserve to be treated as any other neighbours would be.

However some can make life in the surrounding area a misery, in which case I would probably be rather pissed off.

I have heard some very bad stories, and I wouldn't want it to happen to me.

That would completely depend on the individuals. I would say the same about any broad category of people. I don't base my ideas of the people on their race, religion or any other broad group. There are good and bad people in all of them. Gypsies are no exception.

If they were allowed to be there, and they took care of their area I'd have no problem.

However, that's the same with anyone of any race who set up home next to mine. That's the same if a white middle-class family moved into the house next to mine. It has nothing to do with their race or colour or nationality or religion but with how good or bad they are as neighbours.

I'd ask them for some lucky heather. The stuff in my garden must be unlucky - it doesn't grow enough.

PS This topic doesn't have to be about racism - it has to do with the dominant values in our society and the expectations we have of others. Most Romany people are no problem at all - most aren't even travellers.

Dude, there are complete different things. If 20 britons arrive and camp around my house would be the same response.

People usually do this confunsion about emotions due our ocidental way of labelling everything.

There are respect about our boundries and there are diferent ways of life. If you transpass my boundries by right, perhaps something is wrong. If you are different, but respect my physical boundries, then is ok.

Two different ways of thought, dude.

They do every year!

As I am the direct descendantof a gypsy I don't have a lot of problems as we know and respect each other's families but I know some of my neighbours have real problems with vandalism and theft.

Actually I do have a big travellers camp next to where I live- don't cause any more problems than the rest of my neighbours.
