I'm not sure what the last poster was thinking of, but Savannah has loads of history. It's historical district is laid out around 20+ parks, called squares, with beautiful old houses surrounding their borders. Lots of overhanging trees, flowers, benches and fountains. The whole place just has this really beautiful, laid-back vibe; just what we northerners imagine the south to be like. Plenty of historical attractions here, including important sites from the Civil War era, Reconstruction etc. There's also a really cool Ghostwalk that leaves from one of the squares around dusk- a nice way to see some of the city's "darker" history:) Just do a Yahoo search on Savannah- you should turn up plenty of places to visit.

Plus, for nearby beaches, there is Tybee Island and Georgia's Golden Isles are only about an hour away. I don't know much about Charleston, but I know you can't go wrong with Savannah. I'm from Philadelphia, so I'm not just tooting my own city's horn.

I am not sure how old you are and what kind of a place you are looking for but I have been to both. Charleston is a bit more ' fun ' so to speak, Savannah has a lot of special events and they are awesome, but Charleston is always a little busy.. Both cities are gorgeous.. and as someone else pointed you could always drive from one to the other as they are not that far apart. I personaly liked Charleston a lot better, the town is laid out in a really beautiful manner, with lots of low buildings, close to the ocean, has a really good feel to it, but with a great youthful vibe. Also in talking to a lot of friends they loved living there. I am not sure abou the cost of living compared to the two.... but in the end it will come down to what works the best for you I guess...

Charleston, SC definetly. Then you can drive to Savannah, GA. Charleston is an historic area with great sceneray. Lots of great places to eat and good shopping areas.

Savanah is cool, but not historic. Saint Patties Day is the best day to be in Savannah. They dye the river green.

Charleston is completely gorgeous with diverse activities and a fun population. If you're old and white, you will probably like Savannah better. Savannah is awful if you are a minority--lots of racist people. It's pretty, though. It still does not compare to Charleston.

If you're young and fun and like outdoor activities as well as history and southern culture, Charleston is for you.
