I'm sorry that none of those dorks new what they were talking about, you have to trade with another version before ruby/sapphire to get sandshrew. red and blue each have corresponding pokemon you can only get in one version, most of these pokemon are even found in the same areas. Sandshrew is one of them. There isn't even a desert in red version.
red / blue
oddish / bellsprout
gloom / weepinbell
vileplume / victreebell
ekans / sandshrew
arbok / sandslash
mankey / meowth
primeape / persian
scyther / pinsir
electabuzz / magmar
growlith / vulpix
arcanine / ninetails

well if you are talking about the original gameboy version and not the fire red version for the gba then i can help a little. first of all there is no desert in red version. what i would do if i were you is try out one of the caves. they are a great place to get rock/ground type pokemon. try dark cave. good luck.

IF I remember correctly you have to go into the dessert and search there but then again I haven't played the original games in years.
