In short, a name.
MP3s are a codec of music that have excellent quality and take up (relatively) little space. They are also accepted almost universally.
An Apple iPod is an MP3 player, just Apple's name for it. You can buy MP3 players that are cheaper and have more features, so don't decide on an Apple iPod right away. Go to CNET and do some research. It's very likely that Creative or Gemini make an MP3 player that would suit you just as well as an iPod, and cost hundreds less.
Also, Apple iPod can only play a certain kind of movie, naimly Quicktime (which is Apple's format for movies). That is another aspect to consider while looking to purchase an MP3 player. I hope this helps.
Cheers.

the most important distinction between an Ipod and the different MP3 participant is that when tunes are on the gadget, Apple makes shifting documents off the Ipod complicated. in case you do not care to workout this function it would not somewhat count number. some MP3 gamers do not help the AAC format, which Apple does. i in my opinion favor a non-Apple gadget, as i favor something smaller than an Ipod and do not experience i favor to carry each music in my library right now.

iPod is way cooler than a Creative Zen, but they do the same thing: play mp3s (altho the format recognised may differ: .aac, .mp3, .wma)
many mp3 players come with other functions, like video capabiliities (video iPod), address book, games, AM/FM capability and can also be used as an external HDD to store your other files
some players use normal AA batteries while the iPod comes with an internal battery that requires charging.
