I find this has gotten a lot better in the last few years. I nurse my son whenever and wherever he needs to eat. In the area where I live (Ontario Canada) breastfeeding is encouraged and supported in most places. Pretty much every mall has a comfortable room provided for nursing mothers and many mothers nurse in public. I've noticed that the States is not so supportive.

This country has sexualized the breasts so much that their natural use no longer has a place in our society. People are grossed out when they see a woman nursing in public, women are grossed out at the thought of a baby sucking on their boobs, most are really weirded out by a two year old still suckling. It really makes me sick. What did everyone do before these formula companies invented their 'miracle product' and told everyone they were starving their children? Did everyone just stare at their babies and watch them starve to death because it was gross to let them breastfeed? Did they all hide indoors because their babies needed to eat every two hours? No, breastfeeding isn't dirty or disgusting - it is the minds of those that think that who are.

I lost all modesty in the birthing process (6 years ago) For my 4 month old baby now, I nurse her where ever I want. Church, restaurants, amusement parks, the zoo.. and I dont take any effort to be descreet. No one has ever made any comments to me. Im sure if someone was really watching they would see a little more then the legal limit...but that gets me on another tirade all together.(the one about why is it ok for men to go around shirtless and woman cant?) but i digress... guess its been my experience that people dont mind me nursing whereever my baby feels the need.

Are you referring to breastfeeding with or without a covering? Whenever I am out in public and have to feed my daughter, I always use a receiving blanket to cover up. I don't run around with my boobs hanging out so why in the world would I pull one out in the open to nurse my baby without covering up. I do feel a little uncomfortable nursing in public so if I am with a group of people I know, I always ask if its okay. Uncomfortable probably because I have never seen anyone nursing in public. My husband doesn't like the idea of others seeing my breasts either.

Fair question but I don't generalize, so i'll just give you MY take on things. I don't freek out, I kinda enjoy seeing it, shows we're free to make choices! It's a fact of life ...a mother must breast feed, when the baby needs feeding (if that's the form of feeding they choose). The fast paced life we live now demands we do things on the fly, where and when we need to. Mothers are no exeption. Men and boy's all like blump ripe breasts, 'nother fact of life. Women and girls don't like there male counterparts gawking @ those breasts, and society "IN GENERAL" doesn't approve of the practice. If the baby is hungry FEED IT!!! anyway you see fit, tit or bottle makes no difference. Oh, when my wife breast fed the kids , she usually had a woobie draped over the babies head and her shoulder so not to offend outhers.

In America, breast feeding was not common as it is now. so people are not used to seeing a baby suckling at his/her moms breast.
Rest of the world, its common to see a mom nursing the child and people dont find it strange.
Similarly people from the rest of the world are amazed to see that women are so independent in America!
if something is new or uncommon, people take time to get used to it.

Good question!!! I want to know that as well. As a nursing mother it's frustrating to get dirty looks when I'm nursing my 5 month old baby. It's one of the most natural things that humans can do.

Yes, American in a general sense is puritanical. The religous wrong...err...right has twisted people so much that anything remotely sexual is wrong and should be condemed. We should deny all existence of sex and sexuality and have no clue about how nature works.
However if it were a mother teaching her children how to clean a small caliber rifle it would be perfectly fine.

It's a natural and nurturing thing... If you don't want to see it look the other way!!! It's basically the same as giving a baby a bottle in public... AND It's not GROSS!!! That was a dumb statement... It's been proven babies are healthier when breast fed and it gives them more nurture leaving the kid less likely to grow up and be a psychopath... What is gross about that???

I don't see it as wrong. Good for the mother for being able to do that for her baby. I would probably be a little "Huh?" and do a double take if I saw a woman doing that in public, but that would only be because it is such a rare site.
