There is actually a debate on what exactly is the longest word. Some will say that a scientific name for a protien would be the longest word, looking something like this........

Others believe you can not count this as an actual word however due to the fact that you can always add another amino acid and make it larger. You also never see a word like this printed in literature.

The longest english word I believe is PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS, which is a lung disease of some sort.

Frank Folsom cited the longest word as being a welsh word for the name of a city

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwlllantysiliogogoch

but the city is usually just called Llanfair.

3640 sounds awfully long, but I don't doubt there are plenty of science (especially medical) terms appreciably longer than the infamous antidisestablishmentarianism (which I understand was a contrived term right from the start, which in fact proves the point I'm about to make). But I would argue that these "longest word in the dictionary" candidates are a bit of a fraud, in the sense that the actual word, the root, is quite short and the excessive length is achieved by tacking on countless suffixes which specify the cause, location, direction, etc. of the root condition/object. In conventional english these would simply be separate adjectives/adverbs making for a long sentence, but average length words.

From what I know, the longest non-chemical word would be pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It first appeared in Webster's 3rd or something like that and has been the longest word in the dictionary since. Check out the site though.
