You must use a layered approach to removing spyware/adware as there is no commonly recognized rule for what constitutes these nasties; and free isn't always better
I have used CounterSpy and though good, it created too many false positives. Same with Spycatcher Express and Spyware Doctor, which recently detected the uninstaller of a well-known and trusted mp3 converter as potential spyware...ugh!
If you are worried about Trojans in particular, consider
A-squared Free (or the paid version)
TrojanHunter
- http://www.misec.net/
Ewido
- http://www.ewido.net/en/
but ALWAYS use these products with caution. The days when you could rely on AVG, Spybot and Ad Aware Personal alone have long gone I'm afraid. Just because your freeware didn't detect it doesn't mean it isn't there.

You are the best or worst defense of your computer.
Follow safe computing rules and use ALL of the following, or your own trusted software. (anti-virus-spyware-malware, and firewall) No software is 100% effective against it all.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Space Man, I think you'll find that Zone Alarm isn't free, unless a "15-day free trial" is considered free.

If I am incorrect in my statement, please don't hesitate in pointing me in the right direction. I hope I'm wrong!
I personally use Spyware Doctor, the afore-mentioned Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and Spyware Blaster to remove the majority of spyware from my system (you will never remove everything). I have been recommended to run these programmes prior to rebooting - I do so every night after I've finished using my PC.
But it would appear that your main problem is not having a firewall running, so sort that out first and foremost by looking at your Security Center in the Control Panel.

Because they are both free.
Spend some money on Kapersky anti virus then get a firewall set up. not norton.
Finally buy a U3 Memory stick and get the scanner on that for a second opinion.
Stop going to dodgy websites too

Go to http://www.cnet.com and download Avast Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spybot Search And Destroy, and, Spyware Blaster. These are excellent programmes, 100% effective, and they are all FREE. I use all the above, and recommend them, the only virus I have ever had was 5 years ago when I was using McAffee, McAffee couldn't move it, but Avast did.

Ad-Aware is not for trojans its for bugs that you get from websites (mainly) and AVG dosent seem to be able to delete things! i dont recoment using it! get a diffrent anti virus get something like eTrust anti virus or Panda Internet security. (search for it through microsoft because you get really long free trail times and you dont have to buy it later it just lets you download it! like the panda one you get it for about a year free! if not that get the google pack by going to pack.google.co.uk and it will give you norton anti virus free for 6 months) And make sure you get a good firewall to stop anymore getting in!
