because I made myself 'fit' into society for nearly 34 yrs, I spent the majority of it in deep depression.........it got so bad that the last round of depression would have killed me emotionally if not physically............now that I'm out (being myself) things have done a 180........those that left my life when I came out have been replaced by some very wonderful people............and now I truly do 'fit' in life!

If "yourself" is a rapist or a murderer, then society will put you in jail. If "yourself" is an intelligent, productive individual, then society will reward you in various ways.
As far as sex goes, why make it a "society" issue? Are you planning to have sex with "society" or just a few individual people? Most people are quiet about their sex lives and don't consider it to be society's business.
The problems start when people who are different from most other people then want to be recognized, acknowledged, approved, and rewarded for being different. That only happens when the difference is of some benefit to society.
Because homosexuality doesn't seem to have any particular benefit to society (other than better broadway shows, improved interior decorating, and another source of humor) society doesn't particularly value homosexuality.
Be yourself, but if yourself is someone that wants all of the other selves in the world to admire you, then your self will be disappointed. Be your self and enjoy being your self. Follow the rules of society regarding theft, rape, murder, etc, etc...
Don't confuse society with yourself or your "self" with "society".

being yourself, unless you're a spy, is more important. in the end, you have to be true to yourself or you'll never be happy. my sympathy and compassion goes towards your friend. it's a shame when those you think are your loved ones just turn out to be wolfs in sheep's clothing. help your friend. he's going to go through some hard times, and friends like you are always needed during those times.

I believe that individuals are the cells of a society's body, and that happy, healthy and honest "cells" will ultimately lead to a better society. So, that means people who can be out should do so. It's not fun or productive to live in fear of what would happen if everyone found out.

that can be a tough one. I kept myself closeted for a long time, and I was miserable because I was afraid of rejection. when I finally came out, I found I was accepted by my family and my friends. trying to "fit in" to society while personally you are miserable, isn't going to make your friend happy in the long run.
and Shell, you don't know what you are talking about...how can you say, "be yourself, but be straight" is a contridiction. that's like someone telling you to "just be gay." you can't just wave a magic wand and change who someone is, just because you don't like it. be realistic!

I believe in being yourself no matter what. You only have one life,so you might as well live it your way. When you die,no one is responsible for what you did in your life but you. Our society is very hipocritical. On one hand we are told being different is to be applauded, but try to be a different that THEY don't want and see what happens.

being gay will never bring him happiness,
trying to always fit in with society won't either
Be yourself, but be straight
nature intended that was the producing of children not as toys.

REAL men do NOT need the approval or permission of others to live life as who they are, boldly and without apology. F!!CK the sheep in "society."

The most important thing in life is being who you are and being comfortable with that...at the same time, however, it can be the hardest thing...
