Starting a new job is always scary. So is moving to a new town. Put the 2 together, and you have double-scary. Make sure you lock your doors when you park. Don't keep valuables in your car. Park where you will be highly visible. If you are uncomfortable, continue to look for another job.

Everyone is scared/nervous before going into thei new place of work for the first time.
If it's the area that you heard bad things about, park a distance away/get the bus and walk the last part, so you can see and get the feel of the area first. Your new colleagues will be able to tell you what parking close by/at the back of the building is really like.

Well, few people really love to go to work, and that's why it's called "work." (If they do, they're lucky!)
Also, it's natural to be nervous about starting a new job. The unfamiliar can be frightening.
However, I'm sure it will all be fine. Think positive. One thing that helps is if you ask God (whatever your religion) to "go with you and before you" as you go to work each day. You can silently ask this while you're at work, and when you travel to and from work.
Talk to yourself on your way with positive thoughts and affirmations, like, "I am strong and secure. I am going to have a good day. I am protected."
If it's the people in the area that you're apprehnsive about, I believe that most people out there are basically good at heart and are nothing to be afraid of.
I worked for awhile in a big city downtown area near a homeless shelter. People were on the street all around where I parked and walked, etc. Some were kind of scary, like drunk or on drugs, etc. They'd often come up and ask for money or cigs. I just got to where I'd joke with them and say if they were looking for money they were barking up the wrong tree. I'd say, "You give ME some money. I'm working here for minimum wage and am overdrawn in my checkbook with two months of bills to pay," or something along those lines, ,joking. They'd usually just laugh and go on their way.
Best of luck with your new job!

Pack a can of pepperspray and perhaps a taser.
With these two items you'll might feel more secure, and you'll 'look' more secure.
If there are criminal elements in that neighbourhood, they usually try to spot potential victims.
They recognize scared and fragile people.
Also, if you intend to stay with that job, you might want to follow a self-defence class.
In the meantime, you could continue looking for another job.

Yeah, I can understand you being nervous. But give it a chance. After all this is your first day. Give yourself a chance and see how it goes. Also, there is nothing that says you can't keep looking for a better job. Leaving so soon isn't the nicest thing to do, but it happens.

If you make less than 30K per year in this job, continue looking for another job in an area you find more palettable.
If you make more than 30K per year in this job, tough it out for 1 year and re-evaluate at that time.

Its natural to be scared on first day. Give it a chance and if it seems dangerous start looking for something else.
