Do you think we are guilty of spoiling our children to the point of making them greedy? Who thinks the price of toys are through the roof? Was it better when children just got one small gift?

I am 57 yrs. old and I remember Christmas being a fun time. We did not get a lot of toys but what we got we appreciated. We also knew the real meaning of Christmas . We did not shop for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Now retailers, who play on peoples guilt , are having Christmas sales before Halloween. They make you think everybody is getting this and that and you don't want to be the only one without it. I don't believe your children want as much stuff as you think they do. I think people buy because they want to look like they can. What is really bad is that people are still paying for Christmas from one year to the next. Teach your children the real meaning of Christmas by adopting a family like we do. Help make someone else happy, teach your children that. Gifts for your children are ok, but are you really buying them for them or for yourself?

Yes I have to agree with you Christmas is all about money now. More and more people put themselves in to debt every year just so that their children can keep up with their friends or have the latest toy/ gadget. I'm not particularly religious but i think that Christmas was much better when it was more about families getting together and being nice to each other and having a good time than seeing who spent the most on presents.

Tell you what. I LOVE christmas. I love the tree, the decorations, buying heaps and heaps of presents all year. If I could put my tree up now I would. So I suppose in a way I am commercialised myself. For me it's just the time of year when you can sing christmas carols, be happy and merry, without people looking at you as though you're high. I love giving gifts, I see something and think, hey, such and such would love this. I do tend to overspend, but it's one time of year that I love doing it. I'm not gunna change it.

Yes and I have the remedy for it. For the last few years my family, who loves to get together for the holidays but does not want to spend ungodly amounts of money, has had a rule that all gifts exchanged must be homemade. Of course we get alot of baked goodies from the little kids and stuff, and weird homemade coupons for various services from the "craft challenged" but it all works out. And we are mostly adults anyway so it's not like we really need gifts. It really is the thought that counts. The kids love it too. They get a gift or two from Santa but the rest are homemade. And what kid doesn't love to make stuff??

Give it a try. It's alot of fun!!

I do think Christmas is way too commercialized. It is horrible that parents wait in line for hours and practically kill each other over a toy a kid wants for Christmas. I also think we make our kids less appreciative by buying them everything they want for Christmas. Most children don't realize the real meaning of Christmas they just equate it with gimme gimme.

Yes, you are right.

I try to avoid the hype but even doing your basic food shopping becomes a nightmare from mid December onwards. I almost feel sorry for the Christians who do try to take it seriously.

I think the other problem is that kids are so used to getting what they want all year round, how are you supposed to then keep Xmas special?

yes, i agree, although i'm not complaining about getting hundreds of gifts. However, i do feel ppl are beginning to lose the true spiritual value of christmas, with concern to Jesus Christ and such and more concerned with the material gain. But hey, that's how society in general has become anyway

YES!!!!! Christmas is definitely too commercialized. It's all about how much you spend or what you get and how it compares with how much others spend on you, etc. It's total crap! All meaning and enjoyment of being with family and celebrating a wonderous occasion are gone. And nobody's ever satisfied.
