It is probably something to do with the British they never start without a tea!!

Since Tsunamis are far more prevalent around Japan than anywhere else it is no surprise that the word is Japanese.

Tsunami is a japanese word.

It comes from the joining of two words:
TSU meaning: Harbour
and
NAMI meaning: Wave.

It refers to the tidal wave (giant sea wave) caused by submarine volcanic or earth movements (earthquake type)

The Japanese have a letter that is the rough equivalent of "tsu". You pronounce the "ts" portion of it as you would pronounce the "ts" in "hits".
