i'm looking for a laptop that will allow me to work away from the studio, not necessarily as a PC replacement but capable of doing the majority of things fast. i'll be running a number of graphics programs using large files - AutoCAD, photoshop, 3dsmax, sketchup. i'd also like it to be lightish and to be as thin as possible. i do some gaming, playing tomb raider etc and would like to use wifi, but it'd be a secondary to the ability to work. i also edit films and mp3s so something capable of running editing facilities at top speed would be handy. i'd have a top-end budget of £1000 but wouldn't want to spend much more than £700-800. any recommendations? maker? model? shops etc?

I'd go with this one, http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3Z9L&CategorySelectedId=11105&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11105

Acer Aspire 5652WLMI
Core Duo 1.66GHz processor
1GB of DDR2 memory
100GB hard drive
15.4" display with 1280 x 800 resolution
DVD+/-RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM optical drive
Geforce 7600 Go dedicated graphics card

833GBP, including VAT, I don't think you could beat it.

If you must have a laptop because of portability, then get a Toshiba. go to a retail store that sells it, and look at the features. You see, you might be disappointed if you buy one without seeing it.

Here, in the USA, Costco and Walmart show a few models, from $700 to $1200. Even the CHEAP one would be good, and you can expand the memory later if you must.

If you already have the AutoCAD, photoshop, 3dsmax, sketchup programs, then don't switch to a MAC. Those programs are expensive. You would also have to LEARN.

But laptops can break easily. Get a case!

But laptops are easily stolen. Drug users can turn them into a small handful of cash quickly. Here in the US, it's like a $100 bill to a drug user. That's the next fix. So laptops are the most stolen items in America.

Good luck and ... cheerio

You wont be able to get a too high-end model for only 800. However, you could get a more basic model that will fill the needs of Photoshop and mid-range games. 3DSMax in my opinion will require a higher end machine. I recommend Asus computers for your uses, something like a 2.4 - 2.8ghz, 1gb RAM, 60-100gb HD. That should let you run and store the files of Photoshop AutoCAD etc, and leave room for your games\music.

Something like that. I cant comment on the price, but that will fit your purposes perfectly.

For all the graphics work and editing, I'd recommend a Macbook.

till you will improve to a extra desirable motherboard and CPU, then i could only circulate with the hot one. the rationalization in the back of this could be that there could desire to o.k. be different subjects that could value additional funds to repair, or there could desire to be different subjects arise quickly after the fix. extra desirable to purchase the hot one and function the guaranty. in spite of the shown fact which you would be able to make this an possibility to enhance your pc to a much extra desirable and speedier gadget. you may make it precisely the way you may like it. yet the two way, you will could desire to spend some money in this concern you have. sturdy success to you.

Check out www.dell.com they have AWESOME laptops! And they're all fully customizable, so you can add lots of extra memory if you need it, and take out other stuff that you don't need. They start fairly reasonably, around $500 US dollars. Good luck!

Just nip into your local computer stockist and tell them what you want it for and what your budget is and they should be able to recommend one for you.
