I love them, too. They are the smartest and sweetest. My little boys, William and Phil, act like little puppys. When I come home they jump up at their cages excited to come out and play, they come to me when I call them by name, I even just sit on the couch watching tv and they fall asleep on my lap. I Love Them! Anyway now that I got that out of my system. Use your imagination. Old cereal, oatmeal, instant mashed potato, any boxes you can find save them and use them. You can cut them in half, or cut holes in different spot for the to crawl in and out of, like a jungle gym. Or stack them and tape them together. You can find shoe laces or rope and make ladders and chains for them to climb. Papper tubes and old woven baskets are great. I go to thrift stores to buy old things for my rats. Legos and blocks are awesome. Old doll houses, do you see where I'm going with this? Anything you can give to a child can be a rat toy. And if you want to go store bought try: Ferret, bird, and cat toys. Rats are fun and intelligent, so they do get board with the same old things all the time. Mix it up and have fun with him. Also if you can I'd try to find some sort of playpen he can run around in. My boys love theirs. I got mine at walmart in the small pet section for about $15. Its good for mice, rats guinee pigs, just about all small animals. By the way wanted to let you know rats are social animals and get very lonley they prefer to have cage mates. Just one other rat (of the same sex, unless you want babys) will keep them both happy and they will live longer. If you do decide to get yours a friend, try to get one the same size so they are closest in age. If you decide not to get him a freind, just give him lots of love and attention. They are not like hamsters, rats will go crazy if they are left in solotude. Its like how you would feel locked in solotary confinment your whole life. Anyway, good luck making toys, I know your going to have fun.

I'd make lots of tunnels and things for him to climb on and explore. Be creative! Both you and your rat will be happy that way. I love rats, but I don't have a pet one. My parents would NEVER allow it and I have 2 dogs and a cat.
