We are just a deeply well balanced nation I reckon - we're a tiny Island that has had and lost great power and has stood up for itself against powerful enemies and when you have been through such huge upheavals there is not point in taking life to seriously!
The Brits do indeed have a wonderfully self-deprecating sense of humour and I love that - I would hate if we started taking ourselves too seriously. Without this we would never have had the likes of Blackadder, and this type of humour is definitely alive and well, you just need to look at the likes of The Office, Little Britain and Extras.
Hip hip hooray for us!!!

Us Brits have a generally self-degrading sense of humour, we all know Britain is not the greatest country in the world and can accept that, where as many Americans still think America is the best place in the world (despite the fact its being run by a root vegetable rather than a smooth talking politician)
In fairness the Americans are laughing at themselves all the time, otherwise how do you explain George W's re-election, that was funny.

Well, the smooth-talking-politician-with-a-flair is a puppet for the root vegetable. How cute!!! To us asians Bush may be a 'root veggie', but Blair is a puppet who married a Joan Rivers-lookalike! (Too much plastic, mrs. Blair!)
Waht a cute butt-licking pup Blair is!

Why in the world would you try to paint all Americans with the same brush? There are plenty of us who can laugh at ourselves and find lots of hilarious things in our culture. I'm sure there are also plenty of Brits who "go all defensive." Broad generalizations are generally not too accurate.

The Brits? C' mon...
The americans may be awful at time, esp. their leader, but u b-r-i-t-s are WHAT? Better? Its the joke of the century pal. In Asia, people see u nothing more than a follower, a copycat, & also a weaker version of the Americans. Ur nothing but a shadow who do their dirty jobs... So, ur NO better off
I still prefer the Aussies

The Brits are cool. Of course, your PM is Tony Blair, and he is a cool cat.
Americans are a bit high strung. Probably from too much coffee. But we also have GWB. You'd be high strung too. Thank goodness for term limits.
See, I am feeling better already

we are transforming into a pathetic u . s . because we are permitting the on a daily basis fake terrorist scare techniques from John Reid and Blair warp our minds. i'm getting depressed even as i imagine about the freedoms that Blair is eliminating so actual after our grandparents fought and died to be certain we had them. Why may an honest chief attempt to scare his u . s . with ineffective terrorist threats that furnish no income? Why may a frontrunner react to terrorism by using proscribing consumer-friendly freedoms, monitoring voters, forcing in identity playing cards, proposing motorized vehicle monitoring and proposing a crucial database containing a mass of deepest information? it is the undertaking Britain has!!!

It's the difference in culture, I guess. I simply adore the dry, witty humour of the Brits.
