Technically the sun doesnt move, the earth rotates in such a fashion that the sun comes into line with different parts of the earth.

It appears to rise from the east however. It then moves westerly.

The amateur scientist will tell you, as would Gallileo, that the sun doesn't rise, it just sits there and we spin around it like an adoring groupie. The professional scientist might give you a long epistle of the intricate waltz all cosmic bodies are engaged in as they reverberate the from the Big Bang for (hopefully) all eternity. And I, trying to be philosophical or perhaps poetic, say it rises inwardly, brightening me and then eminating outward to (again, hopefully) the rest of the world. It would be nice if others agreed with my answer.

Actually the sun goes up as it rises so 'up' is the direction!

The sun rises from the East and sets in the West.

So when American pioneers were told to "head west", the morning started out on their back to push them along. Then guided their way westward in the afternoon.

The sun doesn't rise in any direction because it doesn't rise at all. The earth spins. Does spinning have direction?

Metaphorically, the sun rises over you, shines upon your face, and sets behind you; you turning to meet its dimming, humble glow, each of you bowing in respect as you bid each other goodnight.

Allow the others to define trajectory, and east from west, as the Earth continues it's gallant, delicate dance with the Universe.
