Internet is a very generic term and consists of a lot of different technologied.
It is good to start with a scripting language (Try Python http://www.python.org) and write simple programs. Then you can use it to write simple server scripts.
You would also need to learn HTML and some operating system like Linux from an administration perspective.

You need to be methodic in your learning jouney:
1/ You need basic Maths( algorithm , sets and logic...)
2/ You need to know how computer process data -
primitive data types ( bit, bytes, integer etc.)
3/ You need to have a clear understanding of HTTP and TCP/IP;
otherwise everythinng will be hazy even after 10 years of experience
4/ Make many mistakes and learn from the masters
5 / learn from the start how to write clean code and follow best practices
6 / Spend many hours glued to you computer till you get a flat *** - same as flat Eric (joking!)

And before all that you need to have the big picture on how the internet works (DNS)
Good luck

Absolutely and I supplemented my college education 10 years ago by doing this. First, decide on what languages or protocols you'd like to study. Then, you can Goog-- oops, that's probably a bad word around here. You can YAHOO for a tutorial on that subject.

There are so many great resources on the web for those who want to learn -- the hardest part perhaps is figuring out what it is you want to study.

programming is 20% learning, 80% experience. For learning a language (i.e. Java) you can download hundreds of tutorials, buy books or even download books from the internet. Experience, however, takes far more effort and time :)
