Why do they marry the groom instead? I mean, if THE BEST MAN is standin less than 5 feet away from you, and you marry the groom, isnt that like settling for 2nd best?

Okay seriously: why is the best man actually called the best man?

The origin of bridesmaids and best men dates from way back. People were superstitious and thought that evil spirits would try and hurt the groom and bride in some way so they had bridesmaids and best men dressed like them as decoy...

It is rather a duty or honor (much like the bridesmaid). The Best Man is someone that watches out for the groom and takes care of all his business because he is well trusted and loyal. I have been a best man three times and it is fun but hard work in some cases. If you have to make a speech, get a couple cocktails first.

"Best Man" is just a term for the person that the groom chooses to have stand beside him and witness the marriage. It does not mean that he is the best man there at the wedding. Obviously, the bride has chosen the man she wants to marry, and in her heart, the groom is HER best man! You are taking the term "best man" completely out of content!

He's the best man for the GROOM... and he's tpicked because he is the BEST for the job. THe best man has to keep the groom from bailing on the wedding, he also holds the rings during the ceremony. So he better be the best!

He's the best the groom can find. (I know, some grooms have little to choose from or are poor at selecting the best.)
