my favorite song is a day in the life.
this song is absolutely AMAZING because of all its various elements. it's melodic and emotive [the 'i read the news today' parts], it's perky ['woke up, fell out of bed...'], and it's overwhelming [the orchestra parts]. the words are very odd, but extremely endearing. it's also a very innovative song, combining acoustic guitar, piano, john and paul's voices, an E major chord played on a piano by about five people, an alarm clock, and half an orchestra into one song with absolute perfection.
the ending [a dog whistle followed by beatles chatter] is also sort of funny and characteristic of the beatles. it's perfect for a song that couldn't just end with the needle scratching the groove. [since sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band was a record, that's how it would have ended, but they put in a circular groove with the weird gibber gabber so that the album would theoritically never end.]

I have a lot of them - I'm a big fan
Penny Lane
Good Day Sunshine
In My Life
Help
Elanor Rigby
We Can Work it Out
Ticket to Ride
Hey Jude
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
I used to think I liked the later, heavier songs more, but apparently I don't if these listed are my favorites. Most of them I just love because of the way they sound. Everyone loves Hey Jude...or they hate it like my parents...there's no in between. Maxwell's Silver Hammer is very unique. And "In My Life" was my class song from High School (I graduated in 2001...that song was my suggestion and it won!)

"In My Life" because it's a good song to sing to my daughter at bed time
and "When I'm 64" because it's fun to sing along with
And Yellow Submarine. and "Nowhere Man"....

'Things we said today' captures the precise moment when the socialised, duty-driven 1950s ceded to the liberated existentialist 1960s.
you had to be there - a lot of the kids i was at school with never made it.
