Here is what I've checked so far. Tried running fdsik, then format, it does that fine. However, when trying to load WinXP, it stops during the install. It does not stop in the same place every time. I think it may be the CPU is over heating. No response from keyboard or mouse and screen is frozen. I tried another disk, tried another known good video card, tried another known keyboard, tried another known good IDE cable.

I tried known good stick of 128 RAM. This is a Micron Milenium computer. I pulled the case off and visually inspected all connections were firmly connected and there is no visable damage or spills. I think the system may not be cooling the CPU. I have one small fan directly over top of the CPU and one directly on the heat sinks of the CPU. There is a lot of dust built up in the CPU. I guess I'll try taking a can of compressed air and blowing out the case and both fans. If blowing the dust out doesn't solve my problem, what else can I do or what else can I check

Sounds like you probably have found the problem, overheating, that's about the only thing that displays those symptoms. You could try leaving the side cover off and perhaps a program like Motherboard monitor (link supplied below) will complete the picture. Good luck!

A couple things to check.
Try another CD-ROM drive. if the laser is failing, you can have issues like this.
Also, check to see if there are any bad sectors forming on the hard disk.
When you next boot up your DOS diskette, type FDISK /MBR
Then immediately reboot.
This clears the master boot record in case a virus is hiding there (all the fdisking and reformatting in the world won't clear the master boot record [or virus hiding there] unless you do this)
If you suspect the processor, tr slowing the processor down in the CMOS setup (BIOS).
Check your power supply voltages, make sure they aren't dropping off. Try another power supply if you have one handy.
THEN - if all that fails, you might want to take the effort to try a new mobo.

1. Make a bios reset . you must have a blue jumper on the motherboard.
2.Detach your cooler from the CPU socket with carefull. Get the CPU from socket and clean the metallic surface of CPU till it"s shine .
Clean with a tooth brush the CPU socket. carefull with CPU pins
3. Clean the cooler . it must be without dust
4. Put the CPU in the socket with care .It must be easy to put back in the same position.
5. Fix the cooler with care and be aware , the cooler must be well fit on the cooler socket . if not the CPU will be hot again and your PC will crash again .
6.start up
7. good luck

maybe the problem is not your computer but the cd it self! try to install new cd, because you said that you format your hard disk and there is no problem! if youre processor is overheating then you could not complete the formating cause it take time to complete a formating!

you should try a new motherboard. I think a new motherboard should solve your problem. It could be processor but that's unlikely. I had the similar problem. It stop when loading the XP. Changed the motherboard. Problem solved.

Bad RAM will also cause these same symptoms. Blow that dust out then run memtest. If memtest finds any errors replace the RAM.

Download memtest free: http://www.memtest.org/
