There is special adhesive required to stick to the glass and the mirror. It comes in a kit with instructions The main thing when reattaching the mirror is make sure the glass and the mirror mount are very clean.
Here is a site that shows a kit, however, other manufacturers make the same type Of Kit
You can get it at a Auto-parts store, I have seen the kits at Wall-mart.
about $12 for the locktite kit. (I use this)
Small kits are $4-$6 at Autozone.

If you look at the base of the mirror, you will notice an hex nut.
This must be removed first. Clean this part with a razor blade,
scraping of the old adhesive. Also clean off the residue off the windshield of your vehicle. Superglue (thick) can be used or you can purchase an mirror adhesive at most auto parts. First attach the piece you removed from the mirror back to the glass using adhesive suggested and tape to windshield. After setting up, remove tape and re-attach base to windshield and tighten carefully. This usually takes around 15 minutes.
you can do it!
Adios for now, Al

There is a special glue just for that purpose. Most auto parts stores will carry it. Just follow the instructions and it will work fine. Remember to double check the piece you are gluing back onto the windshield so that you don't accidentally glue it on backwards or upside down (easy to do if you don't pay attention).

auto zone sells special glass mirror glue in small kits. Very inexpensive. Make sure that the glass is very clean and you allow sufficient time for the glue to dry before you hang the mirror back on the glass mount bracket.

Agree with Grumpy....and be sure to mount the metal piece to the windshield in the proper way or else your mirror won't go on correctly. I've used the kits several times and they are still on the window.

Go to autozone and tell them what happend, they will sell you a kit ($5 or so).
BUT-- You must apply the Glue to the windshield and the metal Shim or it won't hold.
