you can buy a remote (and controller) for an exsisiting non remote fan. I think I got one from home depot several years ago. You have to take the fan down and wire it in between the power feed and the fan though. Its not too hard of a job if you have a basic understanding of electricity.

You can convert an existing fan to a remote control switch if you have a basic understanding of an electrical circuit, but you may be better off buying one that already has the remote built in and just replace the whole fan (this is alot easier.) Whatever you do make sure the power is off at the breaker box.

this is not a good idea better of buying a remote controlled fan you'll be glad you did.
