If they are small enough, just yank them out by the root.

First off if they are broadleaf then they are not softwood trees they are hardwood. Conifers are softwoods. Now for your question. It depends a lot on the species, and how big the trees are, if they are from seed, root suckers, or stump sprouts. if they are tree-of-heaven or some other invasive good luck cause you will need it. If they are yellow poplar you can pull them up, but if you cut almost any small tree they have the ability to sprout. Pines are one of the exceptions. Many species of pine are not as good of sprouters as hardwoods especially if they are cut totally down. If they are invasive dont let them get big and produce seed because then they will be everywhere. In my work with the NC Forest Service that is one of our jobs is control of invasive species. It is hard work, but it is the only way to protect our natural forest lands.

Pull them up, cut em up, but also I have heard a Copper nail driven into them will kill them.

Cut them down as low to the ground as possible. Then whenever you see any green sprouting just rub it off with your fingers. They will die within one season.
