New Balance makes good shoes, I love Asics gels.
Stay away from Nike, they make a good basketball shoe but their running shoes are awful.

check out this site - you can enter you info like weight, running style, type of running you do, etc. and it picks which shoes are best for you.

but its no substitute for getting a real fitting from a pro at a running store. they can look at your old shoes and your stride to see exactly what kind of shoe you need.

go to a proper sports shop where they can advise you on what trainers are best for you.... preferbly one where they have a treadmill so they can see you walk and judge your style etc....
you'll be doing a lot of training for a marathon (or at least shud) so you'll need proper shoes !!
