I would suggest using a filter system for your water or using bottled drinking water or spring water that you can buy at your local grocery store. I know that when I do my water changes I use drinking water. It helps lower all the harmful levels since it has nothing in it.

Get the same RO water that people use for drinking - there are those water outlets all over Arizona where you can fill your bottles for like 50 cents a gallon or less. Use that for water changes and topoffs. Even a basic home water filter would help.

Also test you water for ammonia, and nitrites. If these are above 0 you need to do several large water changes.

Look at your tank for anything else that could be contributing to a problem. Is the tank overstocked? Are the fish compatible with the temperature and environment of the tank?

Buy a water conditioner. Don't get filtered/bottled/distilled water. Although pure H20 sounds ideal, it doesn't contain the helpful minerals found in tap water, and it can actually make your fish get sick later because having not been exposed to the stuff in tap, he's more susceptible to illness. Add some water conditioner (try AquaSafe) and you should be good to go.

Don't put your fish directly in tap water. They sell stuff in the pet store that takes about an hour to fix the water but it purifies the water and makes tap water safe for fish. Water conditioner.

Seen as you Live in Arizona why not try using the river water, just don't use boiled water, or buy your water which is going to be costly, have you tried the various medicine's for the water it may help if you continuously treat your water. The next best thing for you to do would be to move and I doubt if you would take such drastic steps

Don't worry........first collect the tap water in a tank or any large bucket which can fill your tank...........
Then add salt in it.........(2ft tank 2 full table spoon and also anti chlorine about 2 caps full)........
Leave the water to about 4-5 days with the filter system running.....
Now you can add your fish into the tank........
Next time when you need to clean the tank, change the filter sponge or wash it thoroughly........
Suck out any dirt by using hose........i think you know what i mean.........
Remove the water about 50% of the tank and add new water.......
Repeat the first procedure to half.......(2ft tank 1 table spoon salt and 1 cap full anti chlorine)
Try this..........i'm very sorry if it doesn't work!!!
I'm just trying to save your fishes........
Good Luck!!!

You can use a normal water filter (like a Brita), or leave the water to stand for a week before using it.
