Fairy tales were dark, because things were dark back then. Take "Ring around the rosies" for example. It's a song children sang about the plague.
Mainly, Fairytales were told to pass on morals, lessons... or just to entertain (like our ghost stories). Most of the Grimm stories, however dark, always had a good lesson. Don't cry wolf. See beauty in the inside, not the outer. Good triumphs over evil, so always do what is right. Etc.

Fairy tales, nursery rhymes and various old wives tales were all used for similar reasons,
to pass along information about how things work in the natural world

to entertain children
to entertain adults
to share beliefs

Originally, the fairy tales of old were very dark and scary. The main reason for this was to tell the story to kids at night and frighten them into staying hidden in bed all night so the parents could have alone time.

They were used to keep kids inside & to use the bucket beside their beds to urinate.
If the kids went outside to urinate the vampires or werewolves would have got them
Dont forget to check under your bed tonight (I'm going too)
