That's just it, you need to find a niche. Of course the drawback is that since eBay is an open market place, if you find a successful niche, others will soon copy you. Consequently, you could always look into some of the items you're thinking of selling and see how well they sell on eBay.

something you can source easily local to you. Then you can advertise it and only go and buy it once its sold on ebay. I buy lots of things on ebay as I live 60 miles from the nearest shopping centre. Just remember that you're selling to the whole world so find something people may want but you can only get here...

The problem with EBay is that one needs to find something everyone needs, that is permitted for sale on there to begin with, and is profitable. I used to sell through EBay, not a great deal of profit unless you are doing huge volume as their fees munch into what you can earn....With high postage as well, theres not a lot of room for manoeuvre , I have stopped as realised I was not even breaking even

Sell products that people actually want.
Selling on eBay is not as easy as some portray. In fact, go to eBay and check out the number of auctions that end without a single bid. Competition is getting tough, as more sellers go to eBay; even the big boys are joining in the eBay marketplace. Add to that the increasing listing and final value fees.
eBay has several ways for you to determine exactly what the hot items to sell on their marketplace:
Items In Demand = the most popular items currently within that particular category. To see the In Demand page, go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html
Hot Items by Category Report = a monthly report that lists the fastest growing categories on eBay for the previous month. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html and select "Hot Items by Category" from the menu on the left.
eBay Pulse = "a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay". Go to http://pulse.ebay.com/ to see eBay Pulse in action.
Merchandising Calendar = eBay promotes specific categories on its home page each month. Savvy eBayers know that this home page exposure results in more interest in such categories. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/calendar.html to view the current Merchandising Calendar.

Found items. Where ever you go you can find free stuff, either that was not sold during a garage sale or stuff just lost. Found items cost nothing, so it's all profit. If you go into the woods, or mountains you are likely to find all kinds of cool stuff. I have found sterling silver plates, china, a bell, cannonballs from the Revolutionary war, all kinds of crazy stuff!

Sell what interests you, or you won't be doing it for very long. Just make sure it is not forbidden per eBay policies.
