I read an article about 15 years ago that said there were 27 active wars in the world. Korea was and is still listed as an active war as they have never agreed to stop, but only to a truce while negotiating. So how many others are there?

To be precise or at least an estimate on the number of "Wars" known to the UN, its 134 from recognized states only. This is with the following limitations.
1. It must involve armed struggle by at least one province against another.
2. It must be formally declared as such
3. It has existed for at least 6 months.
The kind of wars that are new or not within these limitations are outside the figure 134.

What is defined as a war is somewhat unclear.
The "War in Iraq" is clearly a war. However, other conflicts throughout the world may or may not be large enough.

I heard on Neal Boortz yesterday that the estimate is that there are between 120 and 130 wars (armed conflicts) in the world. I can't recall just how many he said involved Islamic extremists, but it was the vast majority of them. I also can't remember his source because I had a 3 year old in the backseat yelling at me to play Johnny Cash-she loves Ring Of Fire.

now adays... its almost 50 or above... some countries have their own internal wars, then other countries try to meddle.. for profit.. in the defunct USSR, almost every independent country attacks another, you can just imagine a dozen of them within their region

somewhere someone is always in a war whether with themselves or with someone else. Their will always be war. Don't know why, but there will always be one. I doubt we will ever have a peaceful world.
