Buy a new computer is best. Many changes have occured in the last six months.
Remove all unused programs. Increase the RAM size. Use a PCI Display card and disable the on-board display device. Buy a newer hard drive with cache memory. (only if you support SATA)
Optimize the computer with Tune-up Utilities.
Clean the cache on Internet Temp Folder.
Disk Cleanup
Disk Defrag
Install latest windows software for Media player, IE.
Remove unnecessary resident programs using run/msonfig
Remove antivirus

Laptops are normally quite expensive to upgrade so looking at your software is probably the first port of call.
Check all of the software that is starting up when you switch on your PC. is it all necessary, if not the disable it.
How much disk space do you have free on your hard drive. remeber that you hard drive is used as virtual memory so if you have less than 20% free them you will notice a difference.
Run a registry cleaner such as regclean. this will clear the registry of junk from previously installed apps.
If all of the above fails then your next stop would be more memory. 1GB should really be the minimum in a PC nowadays.
Next you could check with the manufacturer if the laptop can take a fater processor. though this can be expensive.

Adding more RAM can help.
Be sure your harddrive has 15% free for Windows to use. And defragment it from time to time.
What I see most is spyware running in the background cloging your machine, or the Harddrive is so full Windows is chocking and operates slowly even crashing.
Try all of the following to clear your your machine.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Click on the start button
Select RUN
Type in: msconfig
In the Window that appears select the Startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that Windows is loading in the background whenever you start your computer
The fewer programs loaded, the faster your computer will boot and run
Uncheck any of the programs you do not have to have loading in the background (most people can uncheck everything)
If you discover you do need one to load, you can go back and recheck the box
Also, if you have not recently scanned your computer for spyware, do that.

Software:
Check your start-up program (Start, Run, then type MSCONFIG, then enter. Click on Start-up Tab). You can disable start-up programs here by unchecking them.
Caution: Just be sure you know what you are disabling as some programs are required by OS.
Run scandisk and defrag on your hard dive.
Get an OS optimizer program. There are several available on Internet both free and pay versions.
Hardware:
Add Ram to your system
Additional info: The previous post regarding spyware has some excellent resources in it.

HDD with a fast spin speed if you have a 4800rpm then get a 7200rpm the access time is quicker.
Faster memory, if you have ddr 2700 then get 3200.
A bigger CPU fan helps as well to keep things cool and faster

there are many ways to tune the performance of your laptop,
whatever we do the basic is only dependent on your RAM and processor. The performance provided by RAM and your processor can be tuned..it's not that you can increase your performance just by running defragmenter, you can increase but only to the extent of your laptop performance provided by your hardware as said above....
to tune your existing performance ..
-remove too many startup items(msconfig)
-run disk defragmenter, disk cleanup on a regular basis
if youm want you can also increase the virtual memory of windows in drives depending upon the usage traffic of the applications.

go to start/setting/control panel/Internet options and delete temporary files. Alternatively click on tools in IE/Internet options and do the same. If you have not defragment for a long time go to prgrams/accssories/system tools/disk defrgmenter
