Square root of : _/144
When there are three numbers the first no. alone is to be taken and find the no of times it can be mulitiplied. In this case one into one. and remainder in 144will be 44. Now the first no one has to be mutiplied by 2 and written and with that a second no. is to be put and multiplied by the same no. In this case 22 x 2=44.
Therefore square root of 144 is 12.
Similarly for 256. After 1x1, there will be a remainder of one in 2. This with 56, namely 156 will have be taken for the seond iteration. Now 1x2 and no. 6 will make 26 x6=156. or the square root of 256 is 16.

What the first guy said, but there's a good process for getting close. Like square root 14. The two closest perfect squares are 16 and 9 (4^2, 3^2 respectively) so, the squ root of 14 is in between 3 and 4. since 14 is closer to 16 than 9 it is 3.5 or higher. when you try 3.8 and square it is higher than 14, but it 3.7^2 is not higher, so it starts 3.7 now just repeat the guess and check

Finding square roots by guess & check method

One simple way to find a decimal approximation to, say √2 is to make an initial guess, square the guess, and depending how close you got, improve your guess. Since this method involves squaring the guess (multiplying the number times itself), it actually uses the definition of square root, and so can be very helpful in teaching the concept of square root.
