Was Ira's alcohol induced death a result of U.S Marine Corp life. Being shot to fame, which he could not handle, because of a "Staged" photo on Iwa Jima.
Or was he just a loser?

I believe him a hero despite the consequence of that. We make heroes we need heroes and Ira was a hero. How he dealt with being a hero in our eyes only god can judge he was hero in my book . He knew the truth despite the spin that was his crime. Rest in peace Ira.

Any veteran who fought in WWII is a hero including Ira Hayes. Johnny Cash just seen the opportunity to sing about him and made a pretty cool song about it that's all.

I don't think appearing in the photo necessarily makes him a hero, but having personal problems doesn't necessarily make him a loser, either. What are the chances that yet-unborn strangers will talk about us more than 50 years after we die?
