When did you stop beating your wife? The answer is in the question! Surely the question should be whether Israel's response in war is disproportionate (not unproportionate!) As long as the United Nations is dominated by Arab states and their sympathisers, they can be relied on to condemn any Israeli action, however mild. This means that Israel has to wait until they are provoked in a way which upsets public opinion, especially in America, so much that Israel's allies and friends will turn a blind eye to their response. These occasions are limited and therefore they make the most of them, on the principle that whatever they do will be censured anyway.
I'm not defending what the Israeli army is doing to Lebanon. I don't know if they are just trying to pressure Hizbollah into stopping firing rockets and returning the kidnapped soldiers, or if they are genuinely trying to defeat Hizbollah. Either way it looks more like Bush-style Wham bang thank you Ma'am, Iraq style, than military or political strategy.
If they want to clear Hizbollah out of South Lebanon, they'll have to put in ground troops, and smashing up the bridges is not a good start. Guerillas don't need bridges to cross a river, but armies do. Guerillas also sit out bombardments in underground shelters while civilians are killed and maimed by bombs.
What to do? I think Hizbollah is a different case from the Palestinians, where there is a definite need for negotiation. I would suggest Israel's allies offer real help in beating Hizbollah (this is an act of war), on condition that it is done properly and not by bombing for the sake of it. We need to show that we mean this by not bombing for the sake of it ourselves in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The other condition for help would be that meaningful negotiations are started with Mohammed Abbas, which would involve demolishing the infamous Wall. The rocket attacks are a response to the building of the wall, and have successfully shown that no wall is any substitute for a lasting peace.

I don't think that the Israels response was unproportionate. They want their soldiers back. Hezbollah started it. Every country in the world knows Israel doesn't mess around.
If this is a 'war' which, I'm not sure if it has been declared a 'war' yet, there is a rule to war. You have to declare a Declaration of War to the country involved. Once this has been done, you have laws to abide by.....under the Geneva Convention.
But, I also don't think that the US needs to get involved. This is a middle east problem. Let them resolve their own issues. We need to stay out of it!!
DO YOU HEAR THAT BUSH????????????
Have A Good Day!

There are no rules to war, the only objective is to win by whatever means it takes, and it is a matter of opinion as to if they re-acted unproportionately or not. A lot of people felt that America's attack on Iraq was unproportionate too.

Nothing, they need to stand up for themselves. The countries they attack (mostly) are holding hostages... how should they respond? Release 15,000 prisoners? They tried that, guess what, it doesn't work because they just kidnap more people to release more prisoners. They are better equipped to fight the war than their attackers, and they were attacked. So what you are saying then, is that Israel shouldn't have a prepared army to defend itself with, right? Wherever you are, if your country was attacked and one of your family members kidnapped and then murdered you would want a similar response, trust me... Lebanon and Palastine have a responsibility to respect the Israeli border and ensure that their citizens and government bodies don't do things like they are doing. If those countries can't fullfill their obligations then Israel or any other country has no other recourse but to do it themselves.
KTBLR, and anyone who subscibes to his theory: have you ever read history? They use Israel as a scapegoat... there hasn't been peace in the middle east in hundreds and hundreds of years... long before the isreali state was formed...

The response is not unproportionate. When you live out there and you are under threat of being killed everyday you automatically adapt a very defensive mode and react to the slightest provocation. However having said that it is very sad that there are conflicts all around the world which are never ending
