Ah, one of my favorite myths. :)
Cupid, god of love, son of Venus, is usually depicted as a winged youth (anywhere from young adult to infant). He traditionally carried a bow and two kinds of arrows: gold arrows with dove feathers would cause people to fall in love (most like the modern idea of Valentine's Day Cupid), and oak arrows with owl feathers which would cause someone to be totally apathetic towards another.
Psyche was a lovely young maiden, so lovely, in fact, that none of the men were brave enough to ask her to marry them, they simply pined from afar. Her father searched out advice from the oracle at Delphi, which told him to dress Psyche in mourning clothes and take her to the top of a mountain, where her husband would come and find her. They did so, and she was swept away by Zephyr (the north wind). She was forbidden to see her husband except in the dark cover of night, but she loved him very much, and she remained faithful to his request. Until she spoke with her jealous sisters, who convinced her that her husband might be a terrible monster, and that she should sneak a peek at him. Whilst Psyche and her husband were sleeping one night, she lit a candle and beheld the god Cupid was her husband, but she was so distracted by his beauty that she dripped hot wax on him. When he startled awake, he knew of her betrayal and left her. Psyche was so sorry for what she did she sought help from Venus (who hated her.) Venus put her through several grueling tasks, but each time the gods sent Psyche help, and she passed them all. When Cupid learned what his mother was doing, he could not deny his love for Psyche and returned to her. They were wed in the courts of Zeus on Olympus, and Psyche was given to drink the nectar of the gods, and thus she became the goddess of Soul.

Cupid (Latin cupido,”desire”), in Roman mythology, was the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology was Eros, god of love. He is best known as the handsome young god who falls in love with the beautiful maiden Psyche. This story is told in The Golden Donkey, a romance by the Roman writer Lucius Apuleius. In other tales he appears as a mischievous boy who indiscriminately wounds both gods and humans with his arrows, thereby causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid is commonly represented in art as a naked, winged infant, often blindfolded, carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows.
