guys act macho around other guys mostly. it's the old "alpha male" thing. can't be seen to be weak in the eyes of other men, otherwise they'll walk all over you. you have to come across as a protector. any guy with common sense will generally probably not play up the macho thing around his girlfriend too much. i know that women generally prefer the TLC as opposed to machoism a lot of the time, but at the same time, no-one wants a complete wuss, right?

I'm sweet to my wife. Ask her yourself. She is from Mexico and Mexican men has a reputation of being very macho. When we first started talking she told me she would NEVER marry a Mexican because of how macho many of them are. Keep in mind there are exceptions to this rule and I have met many very nice non-macho Mexican men.
