My friend has set his administrator account password, but has carelessly forgotten to write it down and has since then abandoned his computer. Well hes informed me that I can have his computer if I can figure out how to "crack" this password. I know very little about these matters so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hope it will solve the problem :). It's free if you're willing to wait aprox. 3 days!

get another computer, download a "forgotten win xp" password cracker that figures out the password, put that on a cd, then go into safe mode(f7 if im not mistaken), take the administrators seat and get to work.
the safe mode administrator seat allows you to fix things like this, but you cant do anything else

Find someone who uses XP Professional instead of XP Home. Remove your hard-drive and have them access it as a slave on their machine. They should be able to bypass the system unless the file structure was encrypted.

If you're unconcerned about the files on this computer you could just reformat the drive and re-install your operating system.

first go into safe mode(press F8) then access the default administrator acct. go to control panel, click administrative tools, click computer management then system tools, users, then right click on the acct, and reset the password

Re-install and re-format the hard drive. You'll lose all the data but there won't be a password anymore.
