beats me. for one thing, it proves nothing, as it is perfectly possible to have sex without breaking the hymen. also, it is very easy to break without having sex. mine was broken in gym class, trying to jump over some torture instrument. it is even possible to repair it, after it's broken.
so why is it important?
because some men are proud, paranoid, and jealous creatures, who need to feel like conquerors, like they have achieved something incredible, and they need more than just your word for it that they have gone where no man has gone before (lol - i think i'll call this theory "how star trek is responsible for placing unreasonable importance on a tiny bit of tissue").
also, for the first answerer, having a hymen does not mean you can't have aids or stds. you havea lot to learn my friend... you could even be pregnant and still have one...

Girls have various kinds of hymens, some are thin and others have a thicker tissue. The thin ones can be violated by activities such as cycling or horseback riding etc.
Being a virgin is much more important in some of the mid-eastern countries than the rest of the world, over there if a bride is found not to be a virgin, she could face serious consequences. (remember the Taliban where the women were forced to cover themselves from head to toe?)
A girl with an intact hymen usually means that she hasn't had intercourse with a man before and that is special to some men who are looking for virgin brides, also some girls want to present their husbands with the special opportunity to be the first to remove their hymens.

hymen is very importent if you come from either a very religious family of some sort. many girls today will not bleed on their wedding night and them and their spouse don't really care, but to a man who is marrying a women who is full vergin it is the best feeling in the world to she is only his and has never been anyone elses.
if you are a girl or a teenager and you still have it don't get sucked in to what the rest of the girls do, or what your boy friend want, be your own person and people will respect that.
if you have lost it as a young girl, try from here on to respect yourself and wait for the right guy to come along and don't let boys and men see you as a body but as a body and soul- the wonderful person you are beneeth your body...

Its not important to most people...
Its just something that gets in the way, of young people who are growing up:)
For that "first experience", its a pain, and some cultures "require" it be intact, when they marry, but, who knows... I dont think its valued that much anymore... As anything can break it, even tampons.
I wish you well..

b/c it tells if you're a virgin or not. if you bleed the first time that means your hymen has broken and yo'ure a virgin and if it doesn't bleed you're prob. as loose as an effing goose and you have hpv. that's why its important
