Carbon 14 dating and dendrochronology (date determination by comparing age rings of trees) have shown good compliance in the dating of some millennia, so the method has been validated by another (which is sort of easier to understand).

So, Carbon 14 dating can give ages of trees and other organisms well through the latest ice age (where dendrochronology fails us).

Literal interpretations of the bible don't allow for that much prehistory. But then, since God is omnipotent, he could have created the world to comply with the rules of both dendrochronology and carbon 14 dating. If the creator decided to retroactively include some pre-history, we mere humans had better believe in that... ;)

There is one major problem with carbon-14 dating.
It assumes that the ratio of normal carbon (12) to carbon 14 is fixed through all the ages. This has been pr oved to be wrong (by comparison with tree rings) and today there are calibrations to correct for this factt.
One interesting thing about this phenomena is that nuclear testing in the 20th century has significantly increased the amount of carbon 14 in our atmosphere, so what we thought of as a normal ratio between C14 and C12 is actually a rather high value compared to "natural" ratios.

Carbon-14 dating is a way of determining the age of certain archeological artifacts of a biological origin up to about 50,000 years old. It is used in dating things such as bone, cloth, wood and plant fibers that were created in the relatively recent past by human activities.

It works pretty good for anything less than 60,000 years.

It pretty much killed the idea of the "Shroud of Turin" being relevant to being there at the time of Jesus Christ's crucifixion.
