but in terms of movie superman returns was a downer but the spiderman movies were excellent

By your detail list they both literally kick butt, but beyond that it's impossible to say which is better, let me discuss the differences...
Powers/affect on people
Superman is totally unbeatable, which rules for him, but is hard to relate to.
Spiderman is not the ultimate in strength or power, which means he sometimes loses, which everyone can relate to.
Mottos:
Superman: "Truth, justice, and the American way!" You don't have to be a right-wing flag waver to respect those ideals.
Spiderman: "With great power comes great responsibility." If only everyone could live up to this we wouldn't get into so many wars...
Affect on Society:
Superman: First printed in 1938. My grandma has told me stories of how during WW2 she and her numerous brothers had always bought comics and how that was how they would entertain themselves, embellishing in the sweet relief the man of steel could bring. And now people are getting "S" tattoos, necklaces and tee-shirts as though they would like to be the man who first bore the "S." He has also been recognized as the most well-known super hero world wide
Spiderman: Significantly younger, first printed in 1962, Spiderman spoke to many generations, my favorite show growing up was Spiderman, for one, and most recent polls show he is the favored super hero out of all. With the traveling I do I can't name a place where I haven't seen a kid wearing a Spiderman tee-shirt or sneakers or web-zipping between family members.
The Companies:
Superman: Face it, with out the big man DC wouldn't be out there right now. He even spurred the first comic book movie.
Spiderman: Marvel has chosen Spiderman as their flag ship, as it should be. Where Superman introduced Comic book movies, Spiderman perfected them.
Ultimately, there is no better between the two, for they both have greatly affected the world in a positive way, but for the sake of his affect on me, I must choose the professional wall-flower Spiderman.

Well, it's relatively obvious which one you prefer by the looks of your avatar. Luckily, I can answer honestly without disagreeing with you. Superman of course kicks more bootay than Spiderman. He's only got one weakness, he skin is almost impenatrable, and hey, you can shoot him him the eyeball and he doesn't even blink. Spiderman, while being amazingly awesome, wouldn't blink either, but that's because his eyeball, eyelid, eye brow and eyelash would be replaced by a gaping bloody hole. So yeah. Superman rocks much harder.

Christopher Reeves was a filthy cripple who **** his pants daily and made his wife wipe his ***. The new Superman looks like an idiot and the Superman saga is and always has been the worst superhero story ever.
Boo to the comics. Boo to the movies (except for some of the villains in the older ones). Boo to the television show and boo boo boo boo boo on Superman!
Superman is dead! May he burn in hell with his idiot suit.

If superman and spiderman lost their powers, spiderman would whOOp supermans ***. Superman is lazy, he relies only on his immense power, he needs to take a kickboxing class.
But overall superman kicks all ***.
