We also used to say, 'Itchy twang!'
Don't know why. Maybe because rubbing the chin is a sign of thinking (and, therefore, thinking the person is lying)? And, of course, Jimmy Hill, has a famously large chin, so rubbing the chin and saying 'Jimmy Hill!' sort of fit together. Maybe.

I don't know... I've noticed that too, Weird huh?? I've got a mini goatee (kinda looks like Charlie Murphy's facial hair) But I always pull at my whiskers when I think someone is lying or overly boasting about something - which normally means they feel they have to explain themselves because of their self-conscious insecurities. Pulling on my whiskers helps me to calm down and not call that person out on the lie they've just told. Kinda like a therapist who just observes and makes mental notes of a person's behavior, actions, and mental/psychological capacity.... But dude, truthfully I have no clue. Good Question!

People naturally stroke their chins when they don't believe something they are hearing...it's is a natural body language thing...

everything else has simply evolved from that....Jimmy Hill had a big chin, some wag said it on tv once, every kid started saying it...
