DNS is a database that maps names to IP addresses

If the domain name is changed in the database to a new ip address it will go to the new address

ns1.yahoo.com is a sub domain of Yahoo that yahoo can assign without registering then domin name. The DNS you resolve to yahoo and yahoo's DNS would point to ns1.

DNS means Domain Name Services.

Put simply, whenever somebody hits domain.com DNS resolves domain names to corresponding IP of the site. This IP can come from shared or dedicated hosting plans.

Also, DNS gives you freedom to change hosting providers as you wish. All you need to do is update DNS records of your domain like ns1.prvider.net, ns2.provider.net. Of course this ns(x) can have IP address entered.

Without domain name and dns services, people had enter/remember ip addresses instead of nice/easily remembered domain names.
