Doyle was surprising careful to make sure that Holmes was proficient in the most modern techniques of his day, although his greatest asset was deductive reasoning. I think Holmes would probably be inclined not only to keep up with modern methods, but be at the vanguard of developing new crime-solving techniques.

I heard about a new show on the USA network called Psychic. The police think the main character is psychic, and they use him to help solve cases. But he really isn't psychic. He's just extremely observant because his dad taught him to be this way. Sorta sounds like a Sherlock Holmes character.

I agree with the people that say he'd be on CSI, as there are several instances in Doyle's novels where he uses forensics. It would be interesting to see what would have happened to his opium habit, though...

Holmes had to deal with terrorists, biological warfare, serial killers, grunt work, incompetence, and the police. And his logic would be conducive to computers. If he didn't get busted he would do just fine.

He would be like a kid in a toy store. He wouldn't know what to play with first -- DNA kits, electronic fingerprint scanners, Breathalyzers, etc.
