A friend has asked me to design a website for his new company and now wants to know what sort of server to buy to host the website (he wants to get his own for some reason). Unfortunately I know nothing about servers and was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice on what sort of server would be sensible for a website that apparently will have up to 5000 hits per day. (I have no idea whether there is any other useful info I can give to help.) Plus any other relevant information would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

I am aware that our own server is not really necessary but I would still like to know.

We have a good reason to be buying a server and the not paying for it afterwards - we have had an offer from outside the company to buy the server for us, so this way round there would be no costs for us.

If there are only 5000 hits per day, there is NO REASON to buy and colo a server. It's simply a waste of money. I would look into dedicated hosting providers and see what they can do for you. A few that I would recommend are:

http://www.sliqua.com
Sliqua Enterprise Hosting - they specialize in high availability web hosting and special needs.

http://www.myriadnetwork.com
Myriad Network - These guys are a step down from Sliqua (although they are hosted in the same physical location).

http://www.rackspace.com
Rackspace Managed Hosting - These guys are VERY expensive in terms of servers, but they offer good support.

I would look into the above companies before you try to buy your own server for a website. It's simply not worth the cost to maintain it.
