since it is already in such wide use, especially as a second language, doesn't it make sense to just go ahead and make english our common language. when we have a common language, we'll develop the bonds of a common culture that can lead to a real peace.

No.

Why not english as the International Language? This seems a reasonable question, but

* English is by no means easy to master it is, generation after generation, the international language of a certain elite
* any nationally dominant language puts non-native speakers (in this case 90% of the world population) in an unfavourable position
* English - no matter how widespread still only reflects one specific type of culture, which may be upsetting to some
* in stress situations, one tends to lose ones ability to speak an irregular foreign language
* the above also applies to all other big languages as French, Spanish or Chinese.

We don't need an "official" language, we need an "International auxiliary language" like esperanto.

Despite many people learning English as a second language, it does not mean they speak it perfectly.
I am working for an international company in France at the moment, with English as their official language, but even senior managers and other people in high positions only speak what I would call a pidgin English.
It is true that English is very often used in the business world, but that doesn't make it a world language as such as it is hardly employed in daily life (apart from English loan words such as in computing, music etc.).
Besides that, it is mainly the upper / middle / well educated classes that can speak it (here I mean: know at least the basics ), but not the working / less educated people. How would you be able to implement such a change ? I find it absolutely impossible.

Dear Typhon.....If you think 4,00,000 Spanish are too many people then figure out this.....the Indian Language Hindi must be spoken by at least 4,00,00,000 people of India. Got my point ?

I think if there has to be One Universal Language it must be Hindi. It is the simplified version of the Language "Sanskrit", which has the most perfect grammer in the world ! Hindi is a scientific language in which what you read is what you spell ! (not like English where you spell "to" and "go" differently). English grammer is not perfect. It is spoken so widely only because "English" ruled many parts of the world in the past and they have left their footprints there.

Moreover diversity makes the World more interesting. Only one culture would make it rather boring.......

My dear friend you know it very well that every one in this world has the right to keep his own cultural and social values, so if i am a urdu speaking guy then why should i use English as my official language. If you are not agree to accept Urdu as the official language of the world, why should i accept English as the official language of the world?

Nonsense. That would be a direct threat to the sovereignity of all other nations. Competition is doing a fine job of making American the international language.

I don't call it English out of respect for England (they understand).

And peace arranging is a bit more complex than having one language, but it would help!

For many purposes, it already is. For example, air traffic control operations are conducted in English worldwide. But having a universal language will not in itself negate differences in religion, economic systems, etc.

That's right. If we enforce our ways upon other cultures, then naturally they will embrace us and we shall live in peace and understanding forever.

Just look at how effective our enforcement of Western-style democracyhas been in Iraq, for example. It has led to a far greater understanding and peaceful way of life for all concerned.

Good point, sir!

If it is the best solution for the problem of one common world language, it will automatically become the lingua franca of all the countries.
