Emerald Bay is a very nice setting. The whole lake is great, but it is a big lake. That is an issue if the wind comes up. Across the width of the lake very sizable waves can develop. So check a forecast and stay close to shore. Leave yourself an out.

In any cold water, WEAR YOUR PFD (life jacket)! You quickly lose hand strength and co-ordination and may be unable to re-enter the boat. But the PFD will keep your hypothermic carcass afloat for the ranger to pick and take to the hospital where they can rewarm you.

But it is a spectacular setting. Do it if you possible can. Wear the PFD and have a Plan B in mind.

Bring a disposable waterproof camera with you ($12) and get close-ups of each other while paddling. Leave the expensive camera in the car trunk.

It's a lot of fun in warm weather. You can rent them almost anywhere along the lake (North or South Lake), but Emerald Bay is pretty cool.
