No, he was just smart enough not to be a dictator and let it break up!

He is more of a humanitarian than his predessesors!

Perhaps the collapse could be laid at his door. Gorbachev was a visionary who could forsee the fall of the Soviet system unless it changed. However the changes he brought about led to people asserting their long oppressed rights to self determination and freedom. Don't forget the old guard in the Kremlin tried to over power Gorbachev in a coup while he was on holiday in the Crimea. This broke Gorbachev's power as his survival in his position was only possible with the intervention of Boris Yeltsin and from then on he found himself undermined by Yeltsin's increasing influence. As for any guilt ascribed to him for the deaths of people in ex soviet republics, what are the deaths to which you refer?

US played a great role in breakin up The USSR
