Televisions are rectangular because of the method of image projection onto the screen which has been used in the first TV sets.
The electron gun in the TV emits electrons onto a phosphor covered screen made of glass, the stream of electrons is emmitted in a rasta scanning pattern, which is like a tracktor plouging a field, straight horizontal lines which go left to right, turn aound and then right to left and so on. For this method the rectangular/square shape is the most simple to implement. Modern LCD screens have followed this shape of tv screen.

Of course you mean rectangular, and possibly it has something to do with the 'golden ratio' and its theory which states that objects are aesthetically pleasing if they follow this formula.
The formula is 1:1.62 and mirrors what we deem as 'attractive' in many instances. So therefore, since the shape of a television roughly follows this pattern, it naturally becomes easier on the eye. See source below for further examples and an explanation.

Square-shaped frames give the illusion of seeing the whole picture, it makes the viewer feel comfortable looking at the television. If it were a circle or diamond-shaped, or any other shape for that matter, it would make the viewer feel as if the program playing is being squeezed in, and thus feeling rather uncomfortable.

You mean rectangle. For the same reason that all the photographs that we see take are all of the same shape. You cannot not imagine photos on a triangular or circular frame.
