product of the means = product of extremes

4:7 = x:5
7x = 4(5) or you simply just cross multiply
7x = 20
x = 20/7 solve for x
or
x = 2 6/7

The way to handle the problem 4/7 = X/5 is to:

1) Cross multiply to get rid of the fractions and make things look a little better. This would give you 20 = 7X.

2) Now you look at what's being done to X, which is multiplying it by 7. To get X's value, you do the exact opposite, which would be to divide by 7.

This gives you X = 20/7 or roughly 2.86

This is a proportion problem

4 : 7 = x : 5

7x = 20

Multiply the means 7x
multiply the extremes 4(5) = 20

7x/7 = 20/7

Divide both sides by 7

x = 2.857142857

x = 2.8

Rounded to one deximal place

Answer: 2.85714285714
Solution:
4:7 = since 4 is 1.75% of 7 (4*1.75=7)
So: X:5 =(5/1.75)= 2.85714285714
