You can always call his or her bank to double-check. Sometimes even if you are in a store trying to pass a check with a very low check number, the cashier will call the bank to make sure the check is good. On every check, the banking institution will be listed, sometimes with a phone number. The account number is at the bottom of the check, along with the routing number. A teller could verify the amount and tell you if it is a bad check or not.

Some banks/credit unions won't tell you whether the check will clear or not due to security reasons. Some people have passwords and such set up on their accounts. Try going to that persons bank to cash the check. That way it's coming out of their account right then and there.

call the bank the check is written from, and give them the account number at the bottom of the check to see if the money is in the account.
