someone enlightened me on this Palestine thing .... ok, so Jews after WW2 were distributed in other countries, did they already live in Israel, or was that created after WW2 just for them? And that's why the Arabs hate them? because it was their land? I really am clueless, I apologise, I want to learn ... believe it or not, I actually went to Fitzwilliam college, Cambridge .... just not on the ball with foreign affairs!

Yep, the arabs had the land.
BUT
Israel (read the bible) was promised to them by God.
So they got it after all that time waiting.

Some Jews have always lived in Israel...the state of Israel was created by the Great Powers in about 1920 under the Balfour Declaration. This said there should be a Jewish state in Palastine, but failed to set any borders, which is causing a lot of the problem now. With typical imperialist arrogance of the period little cosideration was given to the Arab people allready there.
The main growth in population came before and after WW2 with nazi persecution.

There were always Jews in Palestine.
Starting in the mid 1800s, Jews started immigrating from Europe, buying up land and rebuilding the country (the place had been a desert wasteland). More Jews came in waves fleeing persecution.
Nearly a million Jews from other places in the Middle East came to Israel to help build the country and escape persecution by Arabs.

Israel as a country got it's Independence from the UK 14 May 1948. Jews were living there a long time. The first wave of modern immigration to Israel, or Aliyah (×¢××××) started in 1881 as Jews fled persecution, or followed the Socialist Zionist ideas of Moses Hess and others of "redemption of the soil".
History continues with many more waves and hostilities between Palestinians and Jews had already started. For instance an Arab riots in Palestine of 1929 killed 133 Jews, including 67 in Hebron.
The rise of Nazism in 1933 led to a fifth wave of Aliyah. The Jews in the region increased from 11% of the population in 1922 to 30% by 1940. 28% of the land was already legitimately bought and owned by Zionist organizations plus additional private land owned by Jews.
By the end of World War II, the number of Jews in Palestine was approximately 600,000
